Gender Affirmation: Why Electrolysis is Your BFF

Hair can feel like a small thing—until it isn't.

For some transgender and gender-diverse people, unwanted facial or body hair can be a source of discomfort or dysphoria. For others, permanent hair removal is simply one part of creating an appearance that feels more like them.

Whatever brings you to electrolysis, you don't owe me a long explanation for why you're here.

Why Electrolysis?

One of the biggest benefits of electrolysis is that it's permanent.

Unlike temporary methods like shaving, waxing or tweezing, electrolysis treats individual hair follicles with the goal of permanently stopping future hair growth.

It also works regardless of skin tone or hair color, including blonde, gray, red and other hairs that may not respond to laser.

For someone undergoing gender-affirming care, that can make electrolysis an important part of a longer-term plan for unwanted hair removal.

Facial Hair Removal

Facial hair is one of the most common areas I treat at Rooted.

Treatment can focus on a small area, like a few hairs on the chin, or eventually progress toward larger areas of the face and neck.

And because electrolysis is a process, I want clients to understand that permanent hair removal takes time. Hair grows in cycles, and we can only treat the hairs that are available to us during each appointment.

Consistency matters.

You Don't Have to Educate Me While You're Here

This is important to me.

You shouldn't have to spend your appointment explaining your identity, defending your choices, or wondering whether you're going to be treated differently because you're transgender or gender-diverse.

My job is to provide your electrolysis treatment and make sure you're comfortable and respected while you're on my table.

We'll talk about your hair, your treatment goals, your progress, your skin…and probably a bunch of completely unrelated things once we get to know each other. 😂

You decide what you want to share.

Finding the Right Electrologist Matters

Electrolysis requires a lot of time together, particularly when you're treating larger areas.

So yes, skill and proper technique matter. But I also think you should feel comfortable with the person providing your care.

Ask questions during your consultation. Pay attention to how you're spoken to. Make sure you understand the treatment plan and expectations. And most importantly, choose a provider and environment where you feel comfortable coming back again and again.

Gender-Affirming Care at Rooted

Rooted is an inclusive space. Period.

There isn't a separate experience for my transgender clients. There isn't a big production around it. You're a client coming to me because you have hair you don't want anymore…and we're going to work on getting rid of it.

That's it.

No judgment. No awkward questions. No need to explain yourself.

Just good electrolysis and a space where you can be yourself.
